Expanding Childrens Church to 10-13 Y.O.

According to a May 14, 2014 Christianity today article, 70 % of Teens today drop out of church, seeing it as not as important in their life or the youth program was more of a baby sitter and lacked the biblical teaching that parents were receiving in the main Worship. 15% of those teens do eventually return to the Church but is a 55% loss acceptable? So how do we remedy the loss of children every year? I see we have a few options before us. 1st. TheThe Local Pastor “Dumbs” down the messages somewhat to allow kids to comprehend. This has it advantages and disadvantages. Advantages – The Kids will understand what is being Preached, Older yet immature Christians will understand what is being preached. Disadvantages – The Pastor is dumbing down the message… Does this feed the Majority of the Congregation or just the few? Would your Pastor feel as effective in preaching the Gospel or would it be considered surface level theology? 2nd. A extension the Children’s ministry is implemented for 10-13 year olds. Advantages – A Pastor or Childrens church teacher can offer a message along the same lines of the message being delivered to the main congregation but can put it in terms that that age group understand. •Should a Child have a question the instructor can take the time to answer where a Pastor will be less likely to stop preaching for a Q&A •Kids at this Age are Fidgety, talkative and disruptive. •Have you ever sat near a kid that will not stop moving, talking, fussing? I have and my kid as also been that distracting kid. •Look around when this happen to the people in your immediate surroundings and you will see that most of them have been completely taken out of what the message was about. •According to a University of California Irvine Study it takes the average person 23 minutes 15 seconds to re-engage their focus •According to Thomrainer.com the Average Sunday Sermon is 25-45 minutes long •This if done Properly (by removing the games and videos, with more focus on the message) would prepare our kids for a main service Disadvantages – the Children are not in service with the parents •The teachers may not be as prepared for a sermon as a paid Pastor •Teacher are not trained Pastors •Pastor may need to prepare 2 messages, one for the main congregation and one for the ki What Verses can we look to in support of any of these claims… there are a few that a refer to a child but none in my opinion are clear as when the bible was written there was no ministry other than the preaching of the word -Matthew 19: 13-5 -Ezra 10:1 - Deuteronomy 31:10-13 - Joshua 8:34-35
